Betta's tail

Post by ladygoodwrench on Wed Mar 21, 2012 4:34 pm

Came home from work this morning, and my gorgeous Betta's tail is split.. he has a spaded tail, and was unharmed when I left last night. This morning it is split. Pics if needed, upon cooperation of the fish... he sometimes gets in the corner if the filter pick up tube, which I put a screen on, secured with a nylon zip tie.. don't know if that's what did it.. I have an idea for another modification, in case he got tangled with the filter screen..

Are there any plastic plants or ornaments with sharp edges that he could have caught it on?

I think there's a test you can do- run a pair of tights of the ornaments and if they rip or ladder, then there's a good chance that your betta could catch his fins on it.

But it looks like it'll heal well in a few days Smile

I can't get over how stunning he is Very Happy

The only sharp object in the tank is the lock on the nylon zip tie on the filter screen, and I intend to fix that now that I have had my nap..

Looking at the before and after pictures. He has gained some "mass"... he eats everything. I try to supplement the snail, and he eats it. He eats his breakfast, and munches the rest of the day on everything he can scrounge up.. is he "fat"... or looking good?

I have that problem with mine too- I try to drop in food at night for the shrimp but they all end up with fat bellies in the morning.

I don't know about others, but I tend to feed mine every other day instead of daily, and give peas regularly. Always had a problem with bettas bloating in the past, so it's better to be safe than sorry Smile

If you think his stomach is looking too round, just miss a feeding, and give him peas the next day Smile

I will do that. Thanks for the suggestion, Star.. my other male Betta doesn't care too much for the snail's food, so he doesn't make a pig out of himself.. this Betta is quite a little card.

Ditto flute it doesnt look badly damaged, I have seen worse, some of my fish get splits like that if they just swim too fast round the tank.

This Betta loves the current of the filter.. I have it baffled, but it is still a powerful filter.. supposed to go in a 20 to 30 gallon tank.. currenty sitting in a 10 gallon tank.. he will go to the oppossite side of the tank for rest periods, but then he goes right back to the current, and power laps it.

Might be how he has done it, if he has an area he can rest then if he enjoys it let him play Smile

My other Betta doesn't like the current.. I have a small filter, and baffled in his tank.. take the baffle off, and he goes to stress stripes.
