Poorly Liz again :(

Post by Star on Wed May 09, 2012 2:37 pm

I had to rush Liz up to the vets yesterday, she was ok in the morning just panting, then she started shaking just before lunch so I got her an appointment for the afternoon. She had a fever and swollen glands in her neck, poor girl cant have an ear rub because its too painful Sad, the vet thinks because of the high temperature it is an infection (god I hope so, stupid me went googling lumps in dogs throats and had a hissy fit thinking Liz has cancer Sad ). Thankfully today her temperature seems to have come down and she is no longer shaking, she is eating like a pig! mince and spagetti for breakfast, to make sure she ate so she could have her tablets! then she gave me puppy eyes when I did myself a slice of toast, so I gave her that (last slice of bread, my guts are rumbling lol) then she had 2 digestive biscuits and now lunch she demanded some kibble that the puppies have. I am hoping with such a good appitite that it is just an infection Sad She has to go back on Monday, if the lumps are still there or not got smaller she might have to have a biopsy. This is going to be one hell of a hard decision because we are brassic and I am not sure after all poor liz has been through she would take another operation Sad

Poor old Liz, but she doesn't half have a good life ^^ You can't help but spoil them Very Happy

I hope this can reassure you a little- Saxon had swellings in her neck a couple of weeks ago (when she was getting infection after infection), she was very under the weather, very quiet, went off of her food (and she's an absolute pig), but once they put her on antibiotics the swelling in her glands went down and she picked up very quickly.

And our old Lab had swellings in her neck once- it turned out she had tonsillitis. Hopefully it's just something similar and Liz will pick up quickly Smile

Thanks Flute, Smile thats quite re-assuring. Liz can be funny going off her food, if she stubs her toe she wont eat, but with these lumps she is eating more than normal! just hope they go down Sad

Went this morning with Liz, the news is bad, very bad, she has lumps in all of her lymph glands, huge lumps in her neck on her shoulders and in her stomach Sad. Although she is still bright and happy the vet says we are looking at days rather than weeks as its so aggressive.

We are shocked to the core, we just cant believe watching her bodding about the house doing her own thing that she only has a short time left, she doesnt look ill and is eating again (after scaring us yesterday having an off day).

I am really struggling to come to terms with this, its literally 2 years to the day that we had to make the same decision about our Jodie, life can be so cruel sometimes.

Came down this morning to Liz bouncing around with a rope toy dangling out of her mouth, obviously the tablets the vet has given her are helping, but I know its just delaying the inevitable, so I am going to enjoy as much time with her as I can (when she wakes up again after her big breakfast she ate!)

The vet has told us to stop giving Liz the antibiotics, so yesterday she had none and today she is panting again. I am about to go upto the vets and demand some more and put her back on them. If his diagnosis is correct its not going to matter just make her more comfortable, if by some mirical he is wrong and its an infection (straw grabbing here) the antibiotics are helping.

I can't understand why he'd want to take her off them if they're making her comfortable Sad Vets really don't make sense sometimes Sad
Fingers crossed they listen to you.

Any updates Star? Did you manage to convince the vets to keep her on the antibiotics?

Got the antibiotics, gave her 1 1/2 as soon as I got back, now her breathing has eased again and she has had chicken and pedigree chum for dinner.

I dont know why the vet told me to stop the antibiotics, I think they wanted to see what happened, but I have told them I dont care what the costs are she will have home visits from now on, as did Jodie and Roxy, I am not putting her through the stress and upset of going to the vets, they can come here! ahe is far more relaxed at home.

I've always wondered if vets visiting animals in their homes make different diagnosis's compared to if the animal is taken to the vets and becomes stressed or anxious?

Re: Poorly Liz again :(

Post by Star on Fri May 18, 2012 10:38 pm

it didnt with Jodie because she was never bothered by the vets, Roxy was like Lizzie is a shaking wreck, plus Roxy couldnt walk on smooth floors I used to have to take a bit of carpet to put down but even then she was terrified. Liz at the vets ages dramatically and she trembles pants and shakes.

I am facing a dilema now with Ruby & Storm. This maybe just a bad coincidence, but when I was younger all our dogs had their first injections and that was it. Chris my GSD was vacinated by the dogs home and I never bothered with her annual boosters, she lived till she was 17. Roxy the same she had all her puppy jabs but with her breaking her neck and being terrified of the vets (plus being told she would only make it to around 3 maybe 5 if I was lucky) but she lived till she was 17 also. Jodie and Lizzie both had their puppy jabs and annual boosters until Liz was 7 and Jodie was 5 this was because I read an article about a link between cancer in dogs and anual vacinations, now both got cancer. I have never had a dog with cancer before and I find that the 2 that had their annual boosters both got cancer, which is making me feel ruddy awful at the moment, or is it just painful coincidence?

Just one of the things on the net about it..

I suppose there could be a link, but I think it's just painful coincidence hun, don't blame yourself. Our last German Shepherd before Codie only ever had vaccinations when she was a pup, and she died of cancer aged 9. She had vaccinations against kennel cough if they were ever put into kennesls, but I think that was it.

Thank you all. Even though the vet on Monday said she had only days, I guess I didnt realise how few, but those days were good, we had nice walks, lots of hugs and kisses, nothing but chicken and sweets.

Trying to get the boys to bed tonight was hard, both are in tears and poor hubby is trying to read stories to them. Ruby & Storm are deathly quiet too, Ruby just wants to sit on my lap and be cuddled, neither want to play. Kes is being her usual self. Very tough days ahead, going to the toilet (downstairs) I have already said "mind your head Liz" because that was her favourite spot by the front door head resting on the toilet door.

Old habits eh.

It sounded like her last days were really enjoyable, I think she would've been really happy having those last few days of enjoyment with you and the family, and I also think she would have been grateful for the quick and painless exit from our world.

Dwell not on the loss, dwell instead of those fond memories, and look forward to many more spent with the family, pets inclusive.
