So sad :(

Post by Star on Sun Jan 08, 2012 11:01 pm

Just euthanised my aequidens coeruleopuntatus, boy had I had her for a long time Sad one of my oldest cichlids. gutted, but she was struggling, so sad how old age takes its toll on a fish, they would never get to old age in the wild.

Swim free little one Sad

I doubt I will find another one Sad

I would like another acara, I keep looking at the port (have been for months). There are just so many "acara" types I would quite happily have lol

Funny you are talking about ports as a replacement, I had to euthanise my port fairly recently for the same reasons, old age. He was the oldest cichlid I had too, been through a few tanks with him...

Sad

They have some baby blue acara down here (though likely mislabelled) as well as some Texas juvi's.

Lol, if you wanted to we could get some and you could collect them from manchester train station/newcastle tomorrow as we travel up (unlikely but worth the offer)

Sorry to hear of your loss Sad
Without sounding too much of a plank (hard for me to do) how do you euthanise fish?
I have heard of frozen water however i also heard this is unfair on the fish? sorry to take it away from the topic.

I hear using frozen water is a horried way to do it as it takes a while its not instant. Clove oil is used to put fish to sleep for surgery, an overdose of clove oil is fairly quick and they know nothing of it, however checking they are fully dead can be difficult and it can also take a while.

The fastest method is to hit the fish over the head with something heavy, it sounds awful and brutal, but you can put the fish in newspaper so you dont actually see it (its what I do)

I am really squeemish believe me, I couldnt watch the boys having injections or the dogs.

The first fish I had to euthanise was my female krib, she had a massive lump (tumour) between her eyes and her head had split open. I sat for ages adding clove oil to a cup, but she kept fighting. I was so upset about it becuase she kept looking at me, its haunted me since really. I did others with clove oil, without problems.

I have to admit, I dread having to euthanise something really large, my TP was the largest yet and that was not nice, something like Jethro my plec *shudder* I dont want to think about that.

It is sad to say, but when I have to euthanise my fish it is the big rock treatment.

It's undeniably the fastest way to do it, and I find fastest the nicest. It's not easy to do, but in the end if its the best for the fish i'll do it.

Its so hard to do this believe me. I had done the banging on the head method for smaller fish in the past but with Elsie there was no way I could do that so I used clove oil.

Some people suggest Vodka after the Clove Oil but you need so much of the stuff! I read an article in PFK and they suggested a really high dose of Clove Oil which took her quite quickly she fell asleep quite quickly and then I left her in the bucket with a blanket over the top of her for about an hour and she had gone.

Totally hate that I had to do it really really regret adding more fish to the tank now and now the tank isnt the same for me in anyway :/
