Right I am going for it :)

Post by Star on Mon Jan 09, 2012 3:20 pm

I have just ordered some plants for my rio 180, see how long I keep these alive.

You can take bets if you like, I give them a month before I kill them lol

Ooh, I love this set up already, I can't wait to see it with more plants Very Happy

Why don't you try some of these? Linky I stuck some in my 180ltr and the plants seem to love it. I have the liquid fertilizer that I use too, and I've actually managed to keep the plants alive and growing Smile
It's pretty decently priced too Smile

I am not so keen on the twigs at the moment, I got some really nice ones soaking off an alder tree, I might change them over yet, although finally my bits of java fern have finally taken on a couple of the branches lol

That anubias is star proof lol, I have had that lump a year now and its still going. I could do with splitting it, but if I did I am sure I would kill it Sad

Plants arrived this morning excited

Beautifully packed.

Put them in a bucket to soak, while I finished filling up the 3 tanks I was doing.

Then had a visitor, once visitor left, the JW ladies turned up with the watchtower mag and kept me yapping at the door Sad, just as I get started putting the plants in, our neighbour turned up, so I have ended up just plonking them in Sad Not very happy with how it looks myself. Nothing wrong with the plants, cant complain about those, they are beautiful, but its where I have plonked them just doesnt seem right! Any tips on where to move some would be appreciated.

I have some close up pics of the plants I will post later, I havnt a clue what most are, I only know the amazon sword lol

This was the twig bunch I picked up the other day, alder branches, I have tied 3 together and suckered them to the glass at the top.

The floating plants hold lovely in the twigs, that bit I am pleased with lol

WOW i like it alot Smile
What fish will be going in to this setup?
I had issues with plants in the past when i had tropicals and for some reason i could never get them to stay alive, not sure if it was my fault or whether buying aquatic plants from pets at home should have been a no lol

I think there must have been an error in packing, just waiting to find out Sad, I ordered 25 plants for £6.99. but I have ended up with 53, or what I count as 53 counting individual stems and what I split up, but saying that last time I bought plants from Mike, I ended up with far more.

I cannot express how good Mikes plants are, they are ready trimmed of any dead leaves and roots trimmed so all you have to do is put them straight in the tank, what Mike knows about plants is awsome! considering up the road from me a amazon sword the size of the 5 Mike sent me are £3 each!! lol

This is my 180 with my A. Baenchi pair, 4 Laetacara dorsigera, my 5 bagrid cats, keyhole and golden nugget plec (which I keep forgetting I have, no doubt he will have a go at the plants in the night)

I am hoping to do a similar set up when I get another 180 for my A. cacs but not sure yet what is going in with them, few rummy nose I think and may up the female cacs, keep bisto busy lol

It sounds like an awful lot of plants for a low price Smile

It's looking great Smile

Looks gorgeous Star Very Happy Especially with the floating plants in the branches.

If you're unhappy with placement of some of the plants, you could always try bunching them together in an area instead of spreading them out, see how that looks?

I have moved some a bit closer to each other this morning when I re-planted the floating ones. I will have to see which plants survive (if any lol) and see how it looks in about a month. Knowing my plant keeping they will all be dead Sad

i hope the plants survive Smile i must admit i have many a time added plants but im yet to have many survive.

i did have one, i will try and find the name of it, and it wouldn't stop growing, it was growing about an inch a day, however every other plant was dieing off on me.

i really do like how the above picture was laid out and looked, i'd be proud to have a tank like that in my house.

Well its been nearly a week, I have moved a few plants around, not by choice really, the catfish keep digging everything up, the floating plants are doing great and now have roots coming out of the stems all dangling down between the branches (which was how I hoped it would work). My keyhole has completely change since the tank has been planted, much more confident, the Baenchi are so much more colourful too, but squabbling Sad I am hoping its just courting behaviour. I have now added an aps spray bar the full length of the back wall to reduce the flow, I think this was not helping the plants. I will try and get a pic up later of how some of the plants have grown Smile

Some updated pics,

my jungle roots, chuffed with this effect.

I have lowered some of the plants within the twigs, so hopefully they will grow through

Tank shot.
